A quality product begins with quality components. At Richard Meyer Window & Door Co. Inc., a locally owned and operated company in business for almost 5 decades, our residential windows are crafted from the finest hardwoods and tempered glass for solid performance, maximum durability and customer satisfaction.
Indeed, with 46-plus years of experience, Richard Meyer knows a thing or two about windows and their design and construction. He notes that with an ever-growing demand for housing in recent years, some residential window-makers have sought quicker and cheaper sources of wood.
”Many use fast-growth pine that just won’t last,” Meyer said.
Meyer explained that pine – a soft, porous wood – absorbs moisture at a far greater rate than harder woods, leaving it highly susceptible to rot and insect infestation. Windows made from fast-growth pine contain wood that has been twice laced with chemicals – first during growth and then again during manufacture, when the pine is treated to prevent water absorption and repel bugs.
“Hardwoods are harvested from trees that are 100 years old, whereas pines are usually around 10 years old,” Meyer explains. “With fast-growth pine, the trees are growth-fertilized so the rings don’t tighten. After harvesting, pine needs more chemical treatment to prevent it from rotting. None of the woods we sell are chemically treated.”
Research has shown that fast-growth pine can suffer devastating rot in as little as five years. Windows made with such wood are hardly a viable, long-term investment as they decay from the inside out before the unrepairable damage becomes noticeable from the outside.
Hardwoods, such as maple, oak and cherry, offer a greater natural resistance to moisture, rot and infestation and can last 10 times longer than pine, making them the superior choice for strong, long-lasting windows.
Richard Meyer’s windows are constructed with high-quality maple, oak and cherry – never pine – to help insulate your home from the elements of Central New York’s sometimes harsh winter weather.
“Companies in Canada won’t use pine as it just won’t hold up,” Meyer said.
In addition, Richard Meyer’s windows feature tempered glass that is four times stronger than conventional glass, while also providing strong resistance to mold and moisture. If broken, tempered glass shatters into small diamond-shaped pieces for safety.
“It won’t seriously hurt you or cause a fatal accident,” Meyer said. “Can you put a price on an arm or a life?”
Drainage is an important, and often over-looked, feature of quality hard-wood windows.
“Water clings to glass and it will eventually drip down and break through into the wood,” Meyer explains. “If there is no way to let it out, it can cause rot and mold growth. In our windows, we have hollow channels so the water seeps through and away without ever touching the wood.”
Richard Meyer Window & Door Co. Inc., based in Skaneateles, NY, offers several other residential home products, including hot-dipped galvanized steel doors, awnings and canopies. All products come with a limited life-time warranty and a commitment to complete customer satisfaction. In addition to residential customers, Richard Meyer welcomes everyone, from do-it-yourselfers to contractors, and will offer expert advice and great prices to all. Why go to a big-box store or a “name” brand supplier when you can get an outstanding product at a reasonable price from a local business?
